iOS developers can now send users advertisements via notifications. Apple has updated the App Store guidelines, quoted by Digitaltrends.

One of the new changes allows third-party companies to use push notifications for promotions or direct marketing purposes.

Even though developers can do that, they still need to obey the rules. Developers will be asked to program the opt-out switch and explicitly ask for permission before sending spam to their users.

“Push Notifications may not be used for promotional or direct marketing purposes unless the customer explicitly chooses to receive them through the approval language displayed in your application’s UI, and you provide a method in your application for users to opt-out of receiving these messages,” writes the new policy.

The new policy will extend privileges to third-party developers while ensuring users have the ability to leave if they want to.
